The short answer
It depends heavily on the era. Baseball cards from roughly 1987–1994 were printed in huge numbers, so most common cards from that window are worth very little no matter the player. Cards that do carry value tend to be pre-1980 (and especially pre-war), high-grade stars, true rookies, and scarce parallels or inserts. The fastest way to know is to sort by year first, then check the standouts.
Why most old cards aren't worth much
Value follows scarcity. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, manufacturers printed cards in enormous quantities, and collectors saved them in bulk. That combination — huge supply, careful storage — means most common cards from that "junk-wax" era are still easy to find and cheap today.
What actually carries value
A minority of old cards can be worth real money. Look for these.
